Last month, I shared an individual story from Big Break, Cru’s large-scale Spring Break outreach in Panama City Beach, Florida. This month, I wanted to share some of the bigger-picture details and why they’re important LONG AFTER the experience in Florida is over.
For example, over 2100 college students came to Big Break over the course of 3 weeks. They got relevant, meaningful training on how to start spiritual conversations using online resources and other conversation- starting tools like The Words Project, which our team developed (check out WordsProject.org).
Over the course of three weeks, those students went out into the town and beaches and initiated over 14,000 spiritual conversations. And 4494 of those conversations led to the student being able to share the gospel with someone.
As a result of those conversations, 326 people made a decision to follow Jesus! That’s something to celebrate! But to me, what’s equally as significant is the long-term arc of the students’ lives. Those 2100 students have been equipped to engage people with the Gospel, and they’ve experienced God’s power as they saw Him using their efforts. And now, they have been deliberately sent back into their regular lives – equipped for a lifetime of initiating spiritual conversations.
Romans 10:14 says it like this:
“But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him?
And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him?
And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?
And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent?”
In addition to the outreach, our team served in a bunch of other ways. They created an interactive prayer room where students could go to pray and worship on their own. They helped prepare and coach a student-led worship team with different musicians each week. They served in behind- the-scenes ways like running cameras and working the registration desk and check-in and many, many other things. I’m really gratified to see all the Lord did with our team’s efforts!
The sacrifices you make of prayer and finances mean that you’re an essential and irreplaceable part of the effort that is bringing people to Christ and sending them out to reach the world around them.
Thanks, as always – we couldn’t do it without you!
We are looking to the future and planning some outreach projects and tours for later this year – some domestically and some internationally. Pray that God opens doors and provides what we need to keep teams on the road!
